The Arusha Regional Police Force has successfully apprehended 188 suspects for various offenses, including theft and drug trafficking. Among them, two individuals were arrested with 542 bundles of narcotics, believed to be 298 kilograms of mirungi.
Providing this information, Acting Police Commander for Arusha Region, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Salvas Makweli, stated that the police conducted a special operation from October 13, 2023, to November 13, 2023, aimed at capturing suspects involved in criminal activities, resulting in the arrest of these individuals.
On November 12, 2023, at 3:00 AM in the Philips area of Arusha City Council, Gilbert Joseph (33), a resident of Sinoni in Arusha, and Peter Waweru (33), a resident of a neighboring country, were apprehended while transporting narcotics, suspected to be 542 bundles of mirungi weighing 298 kilograms. They were using an Isuzu vehicle (plate numbers withheld).
ACP Makweli added that both suspects are currently being interrogated, and once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the National Prosecution Office for further legal action.
The Arusha Regional Police Department urges citizens to continue providing cooperation by reporting criminal activities and individuals. Furthermore, they call on a few individuals engaged in criminal activities, especially drug trafficking, to cease such businesses, emphasizing the legal consequences they will face.
Rain Warning Issued, Five People Dead
In another development, the police issued a warning to residents of the region to be cautious during the ongoing rainy season to avoid potential disasters.
Due to the rains, the region has received reports of five fatalities. Four of them have been identified, while one remains unidentified. Relatives of the unidentified individual are urged to visit Mount Meru Hospital to identify the body.
Additionally, citizens are advised to be vigilant, especially with young children who require close supervision. They should also avoid crossing small rivers or ponds that may pose a threat to their safety, especially during nighttime.
